The Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy is holding their annual Gift Card Drive to benefit the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, which conducts street outreach activities and runs a drop-in shelter for homeless teens.
We hope to collect enough cards to ensure that every teen utilizing services receives a present this holiday. This year, we would like to collect gift cards to places like Target, Walmart, fast food places, or other restaurants around the university. Gift cards may be purchased in any denomination you wish, however, donating more cards with smaller denominations will reach more youth. We suggest Target/Walmart cards with balances of $10 or $20, and restaurant/fast food cards with a $5 or $10 balance. All gift cards can be dropped off in the NICRP office in CSB 221 (there is a box on the desk when entering the office where cards can be placed).
Please leave a name, the number of cards donated, and the balance of each card so that you can be properly thanked and NPHY can issue you a receipt if needed. We would like to collect all donations by Friday, Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. Thank you for your support and generosity.

Given UNLV's commitment to sustainability and drive to address complex problems with complex solutions, the feasibility of forming a community garden is being considered. A community garden provides an avenue for individuals, groups and organizations to work together to foster greater engagement with sustainability and environmental stewardship, as well as contributing to an overall sense of community on campus.
A community garden could benefit the UNLV campus in multiple ways:
-
Provides a laboratory for horticultural, biological, nutritional, and environmental research;
-
Provides a catalyst for community engagement;
-
Conserves resources and promotes sustainability;
-
Produces organic and nutritious food.
Efforts are underway to determine the level of and type of interest in the community garden concept. Please complete the attached survey.

The Nevada Conservatory Theatre at UNLV presents the holiday classic "A Christmas Carol," adapted by David Bell, Nov. 27-Dec. 13 in the Judy Bayley Theatre.
Clarence Gilyard stars as Scrooge and Brad Carroll directs. The tale begins on Christmas Eve seven years after the death of Ebenezer Scrooge's business partner Jacob Marley. That night seven years later, the ghost of Jacob Marley appears before Scrooge and warns him that his soul will be bearing heavy chains for eternity if he does not change his greedy ways, and also predicts that a series of other ghosts will follow. Three ghosts visit Scrooge during the course of the night, fulfilling Marley's prophecy. The first, the Ghost of Christmas Past, takes Scrooge to the scenes of his boyhood and youth. The second spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Present, takes Scrooge to the home of his nephew Fred and to the humble dwelling of his clerk, Bob Cratchit. The third spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, harrows Scrooge with dire visions of the future if he does not learn and act upon what he has witnessed.
Performances are Nov. 27-28, Dec. 3-5, and 10-12 at 8 p.m., and Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and 13 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20-$30 and on sale at the UNLV Performing Arts Center Box Office. Visit the UNLV bookstore and purchase a book to donate to the Adopt-A-School book drive for Cunningham Elementary School. UNLV has adopted Cunningham Elementary, an at-risk school, in an effort to give back to the community that supports the university. The program provides UNLV with an opportunity to interact with Cunningham Elementary throughout the year, and has already rewarded deserving students with a pep rally and family fun packs to the Homecoming game. The book drive will help supply Cunningham Elementary School's library with the books required for the Accelerated Reading program. The program motivates students to read books on their level. After reading those books, students take an online comprehension test, and earn points and various incentives if they score an 80 percent or better.

The Sunken Fleet of 1758: History and Underwater Archaeology
Joseph W. Zarzynski
Underwater Archaeologist (Bateaux Below, Inc.--Lake George, New York)
Tuesday, Nov. 17, 7 p.m.
CBC A, Room 108
Underwater archaeologist Joseph W. Zarzynski's will present a lecture on "The Sunken Fleet of 1758" and talk about Bateaux Below's 22-year-long underwater archaeological study of these submerged watercraft. Included in the presentation is "North America's Oldest Intact Warship"--the 1758 Land Tortoise radeau. The seven-sided British floating gun battery, designated a National Historic Landmark, is the only vessel of its class to have been found and studied by underwater archaeologists. The program also examines the dozens of sunken bateaux (30-35 ft. long vessels) found in Lake George as well as a mysterious yellow submarine wreck. The 15 ft. long sub was constructed to photograph the "Sunken Fleet," but in 1960 was stolen and sunk. Bateaux Below discovered the research sub during a submerged cultural resources survey of the 32-mile-long Lake George. Join us as we explore one of the mysteries of the 18th century--"The Sunken Fleet of 1758."

Please join the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) for the last Gender Research Roundtable of the fall semester on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
Tiffiany Howard, Assistant Professor, Political Science Department
"Weak States, Terrorism and Sexual Violence in Sub-Saharan Africa"
At the time of this writing there exist a handful of studies that examine the relationship between fragile states and the emergence of political violence; few that restrict their research to the study of Africa, and even fewer that assess the impact this relationship has on women. In conflict ridden societies, where the state has collapsed and there are fledgling political infrastructures, there has been a gross negligence in the protection of women and girls. In failed states, women are overwhelmingly the victims of rape and other gender based violence, and while studies have examined this phenomenon, there are no existing studies that evaluate the impact exposure to violence has on women's attitudes towards certain socio-political issues. I mainly raise the question that in societies where women are made to feel powerless through sexual dominance and violence, is there a propensity for these women to support and engage in acts of terrorism and political violence? The female terrorism literature points to the victimization and powerlessness of women as the major impetus that motivates females to engage in acts of terrorism. Consequently, using sub-Saharan Africa as the unit of analysis, where state failure and gender based violence are pandemic, I evaluate the attitudes of women who have been victimized regarding their support for the use of political violence. The argument is that women who have been sexually victimized are more likely to blame the state for failing to protect them, and as a consequence are equally likely to support the use of terrorism and political violence against the state. This is an important avenue of research because it raises the question that if the increasing trend of sexual violence in sub-Saharan Africa remains, will the international community soon see an emergence of terrorist threats from Africa, with female faces?
Tiffiany Howard is an Assistant Professor of Political Science. Her fields of expertise include International Relations, State Failure, Conflict and Security, and Refugee and Immigration Policy. She is the author of The Tragedy of Failure forthcoming from Praeger Security International Press and numerous articles
